Sport has had a major impact on the development of coaching. For decades it has been accepted that all top sportsmen and women will receive performance coaching. Two of the seminal coaching works, Tomothy Gallwey’s “Inner Game of Tennis”, and Sir John Whitmore’s “Coaching for Performance” both have a sporting pedigree. Successful athletes are used to setting themselves performance goals, if they achieve this level of performance, they maximise their chances of achieving their outcome goal (winning).
In the recession of the 1990s the business world began to embrace performance coaching methods to deal with highly stressed environments caused by “downsizing” and the need to maximise performance.
Performance coaching is the process of guiding another person to perform at the peak of his or her abilities. It helps them identify and develop their strengths and to overcome internal resistances and interferences Performance coaches give feedback on behaviour as well as tips and guidance.
Performance coaching can be simply described as helping someone to learn in order to improve their performance. It is usually a one-to-one activity and is not about issuing instructions but is about helping, showing, giving feedback, explaining and encouraging.
“unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” Whitmore, 2009 Coaching for Performance
